Tenth Annual Conference of the

Southern Association for Information Systems (SAIS)

March 9-10, 2007

Jacksonville, Florida USA

Welcome

This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Southern Association for Information Systems (SAIS) Conference. SAIS 2007 is again held in Jacksonville, Florida, with the conference hotel this year situated right on the Beach. The SAIS Conference is an intimate gathering of perhaps a hundred participants, ranging from graduate students to senior faculty and recognized scholars in the information systems field.

The SAIS Conference provides an opportunity for close interaction among presenters and attendees. The forty-seven papers in the program include both completed research and research-in-progress from all areas related to information systems. In addition, we have panel sessions on learning assessment, institutional review boards, and on developing a center of excellence in information assurance, as well as a workshop on Microsoft Sharepoint server. Two time slots, Friday 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. and Saturday 10:15 to 11:15 are dedicated to student papers. Though SAIS draws its attendance primarily from the southeastern USA region, presenters at this year’s conference come from places as far away as Canada, Germany, and Taiwan.

We have two keynote speakers this year, one at Friday’s lunch and one at Saturday’s lunch. Friday’s speaker is Kathy White, founder and president of Rural Sourcing, Inc., and Saturday’s speaker is Rick Watson, past president of AIS, our parent organization. Friday evening will be a special dinner to celebrate our tenth anniversary. The best paper award and the awards to the winners of the student paper competition will be presented at Saturday’s lunch.

Saturday afternoon for the first time will be a doctoral consortium, intended to help PhD candidates prepare for the job market.

A business meeting is scheduled for Friday evening, after the last paper session, and before the celebration dinner. All conference attendees are encouraged to attend the business meeting, where some new board members will be elected.

We welcome you to SAIS 2007 and hope you will find both the conference and the location interesting and enjoyable.

Acknowledgements

Many individuals have contributed to organizing SAIS 2007. This includes the current board members, and especially our president, Meg Murray, and the conference chair, Russell Baker whose enthusiasm, motivation, dedication and willingness to donate many hours of their time made this conference possible.

Particular thanks also go to SAIS Past-Past President Craig Van Slyke who was in charge of the student paper competition, Past President Ray Papp, who is organizing the doctoral consortium, and David Rosenthal, who as secretary/treasurer is keeping track of the financial aspects.

The Department of Information Systems at Virginia Commonwealth University provided the resources and support to produce the proceedings, and Jacksonville University is serving as host to the conference.

Lastly, the manuscript authors and reviewers and all participants are the ones who ultimately are responsible for the success of the conference − without you there is no conference. We hope that you will enjoy this 10th anniversary of SAIS and plan to join us again next year and spread the word to your colleagues and friends.
